If you’ve ever wondered why your networking efforts don’t seem to lead to clients, you’re not alone.
Many professionals are doing exactly what they’ve been told to do. They post regularly on LinkedIn. They attend networking events. They connect with people online and exchange business cards at conferences.
On the surface, it looks like productive business activity.
But when it comes to actual results—new clients, referrals, partnerships—very little happens.
You might get a few likes on a post.
A polite “nice to meet you” message.
Occasionally a comment.
But real business opportunities?
Often, nothing.
This leads many business owners to assume they simply need to network more. More events, more connections, more posts.
In reality, the issue is rarely effort.
The issue is that most networking advice focuses on visibility rather than relationships.
And business growth rarely comes from visibility alone.
It comes from building the kind of professional relationships where people understand what you do, remember you when opportunities arise, and feel comfortable introducing you to others.
That shift—from collecting contacts to building relationships—is the difference between networking that feels busy and networking that actually leads to clients.
Networking Isn’t About Meeting Everyone
One of the biggest misconceptions about networking is that success comes from meeting as many people as possible.
But experienced business owners eventually discover something different.
Growth comes from building the right relationships.
That means learning how to:
-
Identify the people who are most relevant to your work
-
Start conversations that people actually remember
-
Follow up in ways that feel natural rather than awkward
-
Turn connections into genuine professional relationships
Those skills don’t usually develop by accident. They come from practice and guidance.
A Different Approach to Networking
A few years ago I participated in a program called Networking Savvy, a six-week workshop focused on strategic relationship building. It was created by created by business strategist Marie Fratoni and is an interactive, fun, growth-oriented experience that can transform your results.
What made the experience especially interesting was the range of people involved. Some participants were consultants, some were service providers, some were authors or coaches. The businesses were very different, but everyone shared the same goal: finding better ways to connect with people who could help them grow.
The sessions were lively and interactive. Participants worked through exercises designed to clarify what their businesses actually offer and who they most want to serve. If that part of business building still feels fuzzy, I wrote more about it here: Recharge Your Heart and Reconnect with Your Inspiration through Self-Renewal
For me personally, one of the biggest benefits was gaining clearer language around my work and the people I help. That clarity alone made networking conversations far easier.
Another unexpected benefit was the relationships that formed during the program. Even though participants came from different industries, many of those connections continued long after the sessions ended.
Networking Is a Skill You Can Learn
Many people assume networking is something you’re either naturally good at or not.
In reality, it’s a set of practical skills that can be learned and improved.
The right framework helps you move beyond small talk and toward conversations that actually lead somewhere.
That’s the focus of the Networking Savvy workshop.
Over six weeks, participants learn how to:
-
Identify the people they should actually be networking with
-
Start conversations that people remember
-
Follow up without feeling intrusive
-
Turn connections into real opportunities
-
Create a relationship-building system that works even when business gets busy
In other words, the goal isn’t to spend more time networking.
It’s to make the time you already spend networking far more productive.
If Networking Has Felt Frustrating
If you’ve ever walked away from an event thinking, “I met a lot of people… but nothing came from it,” you’re certainly not alone.
Many professionals are putting in the effort but not seeing results. That challenge is especially common for people starting a business later in life, which is something I write about often here: Too Late to Start? Not a Chance! Master Your Mindset First
Sometimes the missing piece is simply a better strategy.
That’s why I’m planning to attend the next Networking Savvy session myself. The program begins Wednesday, March 18, 2026, and meets weekly for six weeks.
If improving your networking results has been on your mind, this could be a good opportunity to explore a different approach and connect with other professionals who are working toward similar goals.
Registration closes Tuesday, March 17, 2026, so if you’re interested you’ll want to take a look soon.
You can learn more about the program here:

And if you decide to join, there’s a good chance we’ll meet inside the workshop. I’m looking forward to seeing some familiar names—and perhaps making a few new connections as well.
